A new Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality (AHRQ) systematic review found evidence to support current clinical guidelines identifying metformin as the recommended first-line agent to treat adults with type 2 diabetes. The conclusion is based on the medication's beneficial effects on hemoglobin A1c, weight, cardiovascular mortality (versus sulfonylureas) and relative safety profile. The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has found that type 2 diabetes medicines containing saxagliptin and alogliptin may increase the risk of heart failure, especially in patients with a history or heart or kidney disease. As a result, the FDA is issuing new warnings to the drug labels. These medications include: Onglyza, Kombiglyze XR, Nesina, Kazano and Oseni.
