The Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 requires the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to remove Social Security Numbers from all Medicare cards by April 2019. CMS will begin mailing new cards in April 2018, which will have a unique and randomly generated Medicare Beneficiary Identifier in place of the SSN-based Health Insurance Claim Number. By removing SSNs, CMS will fight identity theft and safeguard taxpayer dollars.

KEPRO is one of the Medicare Quality Improvement Organizations, working to improve the quality of care for Medicare beneficiaries. This site offers beneficiary and family-centered care information for providers, patients, and families. A Medicare beneficiary has the right to appeal a hospital discharge if he or she feels too sick to leave or if he or she does not agree with the decision that skilled services will be stopped. The beneficiary must be given a letter with the planned discharge date explaining how to appeal. A Medicare beneficiary can do this even if he or she is in a health maintenance organization (HMO).
